This class will cover all aspects of portrait drawing in charcoal and painting in oil. With 12 weeks dedicated to the head, we will be able to delve deep into likeness and accurate drawing before moving on to color, as well as expanding into areas such as the handling of clothing and background. Basics as well as advanced concepts will be covered, so it is appropriate for students of any ability level. Both photographs and live models will be utilized, allowing students the opportunity to work on more personalized subjects and to understand the differences between work done from life and done from a photograph.

Concepts covered will include:

  • Proportion and structure of the head

  • Light logic

  • Likeness

  • Skin tone palettes and mixing

  • Various oil painting techniques

  • Composition

  • Limitations and advantages of photographic references vs live modeling

  • How to arrange clothing and background to support the subject
